Puck Takes a Dust Bath

It’s funny that when I wrote this blog post Puck was on my desk, and now that I want to share it again Frankie is on my desk and Chris is on my lap. They don’t make blogging easy.

As proof, while I was typing the last sentence, Chris got on the desk with Frankie and then Floki joined them and walked across the keyboard. And me without my camera.

Lately we have noticed that Puck seems to want to roll around in the litter box.

Puck rolling in litter boxAt first we thought he was just being weird. It would be like us humans washing our hands in the toilet.

Puck rolling in litter boxBut then we discovered it is common for cats to do this. It is called a “dust bath” and naturally, this is supposed to be done in the dirt, but our inside cats have no access to dirt so this is the best they can do.

dust bathOne of the reasons they do this is to cover their bodies with good bacteria that they then lick off themselves to get this good bacteria into their digestive system. They may also do this to scratch an itch or mark their territory. My worry is that the bacteria in the litter boxes may not be what I would consider good, although so far Puck seems to…

The Cat Toy Dilemma

Sometimes choosing the right cat toy to play with can be a difficult decision, especially when your two favorites toys, the Turbo Scratcher and Play Tunnel, are next to each other. Floki solved this problem by not deciding and played with both of them at the same time.

Check out what Puck does halfway through the video.

In case you missed it, the toys are on the sofa to keep Puck from pooping there.

Remembering 2016

I read that WordPress is not going to do the traditional Annual Report this year so I guess I will have to improvise and do my own review.

I thought I would first post some of the best photos from the Bad Cat Chris blog starting in January.

It was nice to see Chris and Frankie getting along

After seven years, Chris is still a biter.

Even with the addition of our kitten, Floki, I still think Frankie is our most photogenic cat.

Here are some stats for 2016

That is about it for this year. I hope you have enjoyed reading about Bad Cat Chris, Puck, Frankie and Floki. I wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year and a prosperous 2017. I hope to continue to see you then. Also, if you missed it, check out my new photo blog at charleshuss.wordpress.com.

Photo Friday: Attracted by Laundry

If you want to attract cats (without food) you can either make the bed or bring in laundry, fresh from the dryer. Sometimes I fold the stuff that they are not lying on and then leave the rest for them to enjoy, at least until they get bored with it and leave.

I know it is hard to believe but I do take pictures that don’t include cats. I believe you might enjoy seeing some of my photographs so I started a photo blog at charleshuss.wordress.com. I would like it if you follow me there too, that way my pictures won’t be floating through cyberspace, lonely and unseen.

Don’t forget it’s calendar time. If you need one, check out my cat calendars here.

Frankie’s Big Adventure

This was almost three years ago and Frankie is still just as bad when he gets out. That is why he needs to walk with a harness and leash. I would hate to see him get lost, or worse.

Charles Huss's avatarBad Cat Chris

Thursday evening, after I got home from work, I prepared to cook pork chops on the grill. At our house, grilling has become such a chore because every time I go through the door Chris is right there trying to get out. Unfortunately, we had the meat since the weekend and it needed to be cooked before it went bad.

Before I even got close to the back door, Chris had suspected I was going outside and “followed” me from the front. I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle and let Chris out. I figured he wouldn’t annoy me about going out if he was out. Once out, he immediately started eating grass while I turned the grill on. I watched for a couple of minutes while Puck and Frankie became very jealous of what was going on. Frankie was standing on the little table near the grill when Puck…

Our Christmas With Cats

Christmas morning started out pretty normal here. I did my usual chores. I fed the cats, made coffee, changed water, scooped the litter boxes and washed dishes. When I was done, I noticed Puck had pooped on the floor in front of the litter boxes. Despite the poop being a good 12 to 18 inches away, Chris still mad a valiant effort to bury it by pulling litter out of the box.

We planned to be at Rose’s mom’s house at 11:00 for lunch so while Rose was getting ready she suggested that I take Frankie for a walk. I did promise him on Saturday that I would take him out “tomorrow”, and Christmas was technically tomorrow even though it was two days ago.

I don’t know how but he knew he was going out even before I got his harness out of the drawer. I think they just pretend to not understand our language.

Once outside Frankie was happier than a fly on shoot I forgot how that saying goes.

The first thing he did after stepping on the grass was to step back onto the driveway and walk toward Rose’s car. There he stopped for a long while to smell the grill.

I eventually convinced him to move along and we ended up walking away from home along the fence at the edge of the development. After a while Frankie found an area between two homes that he spent a lot of time just smelling the vegetation.

The local resident of one of the homes was not to pleased but Frankie didn’t even notice.

When we left the house, I could hear Chris crying about how unfair it was that Frankie was out without him, so I needed to get Frankie back so Chris would have time to go outside. Of course, I had to pick up Frankie and carry him home. Once home, Chris got his turn outside.

Bad Cat Chris eating grass

A little grass eating and then it was off to see what he could see. The first stop was Rose’s car.

Now I new some kind of animal marked her car. I got down to take a closer look and there it was.

Then it appeared that Chris started licking it. I may have not seen it right but I can’t imagine a cat wanting to lick that so I started worrying that Rose’s car was leaking radiator fluid. I have heard of cats being poisoned by drinking that stuff. I immediately picked up Chris and put him down at the front of the driveway and then opened up the hood to see if there was a leak.

There was no leak but now Chris was no longer in sight. I found him at the back of the house. I decided he would be okay there long enough for me to go and close the hood.

20161225_103435-chris-eating-grass

I returned just in time to see Chris disappear under the house. He found the only hole big enough for him to fit through.

20161225_103814_gap-under-house

Now Chris is exploring under our house and Rose is calling me telling me I need to get ready to go or we’re going to be late. I tried calling Chris to come back through the only hole that he fits through but anyone with a cat knows that you can’t call a cat, unless it’s for dinner.

I walked back and forth around the house trying to see if I could see Chris and if there was a way to get him out. I decided I would have to pull out bricks if I couldn’t get him out through the back of the house.

After many long minutes and several more calls from Rose, I decided to try treats. I went in the house and brought out our bag of freeze dried Stella and Chewy’s Duck Duck Goose Dinner. If that didn’t work, I didn’t know what would.

I pulled one brick sideways near the door, just enough to create an opening big enough for Chris and then called him while shaking the bag. “Chris! Kitty Treats! C’mon, here you go!” I then opened the bag and put some on the ground. At just about the same time Chris was crawling through the hole I made and eagerly gobbled up the treats. So now I re-enforced his bad behavior by rewarding it.

When I was in volunteer training for The Humane Society, they recommended bringing dog biscuits for the dog walkers in case they escaped but anyone taking care of cats need not bother because a dog will give up his freedom for a treat but a cat won’t. I guess they didn’t know about Stella and Chewy’s

About an hour after arriving at Rose’s mom’s house, her cat, Pumpkin, decided to show his face. Pumpkin is a friendly cat but he is not much of a lap cat, but he took a liking to my lap while I was there.

The last time we went shopping, I bought a can of pink salmon for the cats for Christmas and I opened it for them when we got home.

They all loved it.

The rest of the day was pretty uneventful, but that was fine with me.

By the way, I discussed with Rose later that day where she might have been parked that a cat would want to mark her car. That is when she remembered that we were at The German Restaurant the evening before. Our tradition is to go to The German Restaurant on Christmas eve and then go to the 7:00 service. It is our favorite restaurant for several reasons that don’t include cats but we love that they have several strays that they take care of.

What about you? Was your holiday as fun as mine?

Cabinets are a Gateway Drug

You may remember a post from last month when Frankie leaped from the counter to the top of the bathroom door. Before that he had figured out how to stand on the toilet and open the cabinet where our linens are kept. Once the door was open, he was able to jump into the cabinet, despite the awkward angle. I guess the thrill of getting into the cabinet was short-lived and he needed to set his sights higher.

The other day Frankie had let himself into the cabinet and our kitten Floki was going crazy with jealousy. Just to see what would happen (and to get him to stop crying) I put Flokie on the shelf above Frankie. That got Chris’s attention and he jumped on the shelf with Frankie. I decided it was time to grab my camera but Frankie had enough and jumped down before I returned.

Because nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd, Puck had to join in to see what was going on.

20161217_cats_637

After giving Puck a whack or two, Floki redirected his attention to bigger and better things.

Getting into a cabinet might be the goal of some cats but others need more. Floki had much higher aspirations.

20161217_cats_643

To stand on top of two doors is quite an accomplishment but Frankie did one door and Floki was not going to be beat.

“Ta-Da!” Mission accomplished! Now Dad had to get him down. Of course, he wasn’t happy about that and had to start over from the bottom.

Puck was content to be a bystander.

Since he started on the second shelf last time, he had a bit of trouble figuring out how to get back there. This is when mean ol’ Dad decided to pull funding for the expedition and cut the adventure short. What is a cat parent to do?

Photo Friday: Group Nap

It is always a pleasure seeing our cats sleeping together. Granted, they are not exactly “together” in this picture but I still like it. You may remember my Photo Friday Post from two weeks ago when I mentioned how difficult it was to get all four of our cats together for a group photo. Well, it is still true this week.

If anybody reading this has multiple cats, how many of them sleep together at the same time? Feel free to link to a picture if you have one.
