The Cats and the Contractors

Today I had the day off from work and we had two contractors scheduled for the same time. The plumber arrived first and all three cats were on the patio at the same time so I just slipped the cover on the cat door so they couldn’t come inside. Chris was actually the good cat this time while Frankie and Puck were desperate to come inside.

I was a little surprised Puck was desperate to get inside a house with a stranger in it but I understood that under the bed was where he was comfortable riding out the “stranger” storm. Of course, getting to the bed meant going right past the big, bad plumber. Frankie didn’t surprise me. He is a pain when he wants to go out and a pain when he wants to come in.

I thought the desperation in both cats was worth getting on video so I quickly opened the slider, stepped out and closed it again. Unfortunately I wasn’t fast enough and Puck slipped past me and into the house, bumping his head on the door as he went in. I felt bad about that but it didn’t slow him down in his effort to get UTB.

I did manage to capture Frankie’s desperate attempt to get in the house while Chris lied on the ground and watched his craziness.

As soon as the plumber left I let them back in the house. Five minutes later, two guys showed up to replace our living room window, which the lawn guy chipped several months ago. Puck was still under the bed so I picked up Chris and Frankie and put them in the bedroom and shut the door. After about fifteen minutes of loud banging, they were done and life was back to normal.

What do you do with your pets when a stranger comes to your house?

Frankie’s Making Biscuits

Frankie has this very cute habit of holding a blanket in his mouth and kneading. He especially likes our fleece blankets. We have one on the bed in the back bedroom that always seems to be messed up when we get home in the evening. One night we even found the blanket in the living room.

While I was up late on New Year’s Eve, I noticed Frankie was making biscuits on the bed. I don’t know how long he was doing it before I saw him but I recorded him for over ten minutes after I noticed him. Here is a shortened version of that video.

We call it “marching” in our house but most people call it “making biscuits,” “kneading,” “treading” or some variation. What do you call it?

This Toy is the Cat’s Meow

A little over a year ago we introduced our cats to the “Cat’s Meow” cat toy (read about it here). They loved that toy but we were not the best at remembering to take it out and turn it on. We ended up giving it to someone with more cats than us.

This Christmas we decided to buy them another one and hopefully be better about using it. Frankie was not around for the last one and found it quite fascinating, as did Chris. Puck missed out on the first round of playing because he was hiding under the bed, but he did get a paw in there a little later.

Chris had it figured out pretty quickly and was under the cover working at the mechanism.

Cat's meow cat toyI got a nice Christmas gift too. It is a Canon EOS-M digital camera that I took the video and photograph with. All in all, it was a very nice Christmas

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas

When all through the house

The cats were all playing

With a toy mouse

The ornaments were hung

On the tree with great care

In hopes that the cats

Would not notice them there

The presents were nestled

Under the tall Christmas tree

With pokes, tears and scratches

Hidden so nobody could see

All of a sudden

On the roof was a noise

Puck hid under the bed

But not the other two boys

Away to the window

They flew like a flash

When they saw nothing there

They made another quick dash

Out on the patio

They saw an amazing sight

Eight galloping Reindeer

And a sleigh in full flight

Back in the house

Under the tree

Were three new gifts

Marked Chris, Puck and Frankie

Conversations With Chris: The Gift

Chris

I think I’d like to open my Christmas gift now, Dad

Chuck

It’s too early, Chris. Christmas is more than a week away. Besides, you already tried opening a present that wasn’t yours and Rose had to tape it back together.

Torn gift.

Chris

That wasn’t me. That was… uh… Puck, I mean Frankie.

Chuck

It doesn’t matter. If you open it now you will ruin the surprise. Besides, how do you even know you have a present?

Chris

Who else would have a present with mice tied to the gift bag?

Chuck

Good point, but you still have to wait.

Chris

How about a little catnip then?

Chuck

Fine.

Works every time.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Well, it’s that time of year again. Time to put up the Christmas tree, string the lights and decorate the house. For the feline members of our family, this is equally festive because there is just so many new things to get into.

Bad Cat Chris and Frankie

Hey Frankie! Look at these little people.

Forget the little people, Chris. Check out this box.

Forget the box, Frankie. look at the size of this bag.

The Closet King

The other day Frankie tried to get into Rose’s closet. He managed to pop it open slightly but could not get it open far enough to get inside. It was a good effort but the door doesn’t slide easily so I couldn’t blame him for failing. That’s when Chris stepped in. I imagined him saying, “Move aside, let me show you how it’s done.”

The Lizard Dilemma

The other day Chris was outside and caught another lizard. That is bad enough but he has this irresistible urge to bring his catch into the house and doesn’t know what to do with it when he can’t get in.

I’m not sure why he has to bring it inside. At first I thought it was instinctual but then I realized that lions don’t kill a gazelle and then drag it back to the den to eat it. Maybe he just wants to show it off to Puck and Frankie.
