Finally, Someone to Nap With

Here is a post from 2013. After we lost Abbey, adopted Puck and lost Tigger, Chris had nobody to nap with until…

Chris has always been the odd cat out when it comes to napping partners. Other cats would pair up for a nap and Chris was left to join them. Usually that involved waking them up and annoying them, but they would usually accept him being there and go back to sleep.

The problem then was that nobody wanted to play with Chris. He was a gold ball of energy but had no one to help him release that energy. That changed when we got Puck, who would not only play with Chris but would actually give him a run for his money. Then Tigger died…

Puck was the player but Tigger was the only cat left that would tolerate napping with Chris, especially since Chris is not a good napper. I felt bad every time I watched Chris lie down next to a napping Puck, only to see Puck get up and move…

Love Hurts

Chris is the most affectionate cat I have ever had. He is also more affectionate than any dog I have ever had. He spends a good part of his day on my lap, on Rose’s lap or curled up with Frankie or Puck.

I’m not complaining, I love that about him, but part of that affection is an unusual need to bite, especially my nose. Fortunately, the biting is only a small part of his affection but it is quite annoying and the reason all the cats get locked out of the bedroom at night.

Now I’d like to hear about your most affection pet.

Are Ginger Cats Friendlier?

This was my most popular post ever. When I wrote it in 2013, I could find no evidence that coat color affects behavior. Since then, after the many comments and other tidbits of information I have heard, I am starting to lean toward the possibility that it may be true. I will have to dig into the research and rewrite this.

I want to first thank Janet Blue from The Cat on my Head blog for honoring Bad Cat Chris with The WordPress Family Award. It is the third time Chris was honored recently and I am very happy to be part of such a wonderful family of pet bloggers.

Today I want to talk about ginger cats. I refer to Chris, and cats like him, as gold cats but Ginger seems to be the most popular term. They are also refered to as orange, buff and probably a few others. The common belief is that ginger cats have a good temperament and are more friendly and outgoing than the average cat. Indeed, Chris is a very friendly cat and our other ginger cat, Tigger, was also very friendly.

I first heard of this belief back in 2006 when Rose and I started our short jaunt into the world of…

Letting Go is Hard to Do, Especially When it’s a Lizard

Chris slipped past me and out the door twice on Sunday. The first time he caught a lizard right away. Even though Chris has gained some weight lately, he is still better at catching lizards, and everything else, than all the other cats we have ever had. When he does catch a lizard, he wants to immediately bring it in the house.

I’m not sure why he has to bring his catch inside but he will just sit at the door with a lizard hanging from his mouth until someone lets him in. That was not going to happen Sunday and I tried to get him to let it go but he was not up for that.

Does anyone else have a cat that has to bring their catch inside?

The Biting Continues

Once a biter, always a biter.

When Chris was a kitten, we had a big problem trying to sleep because when he wasn’t biting our ears or noses he was attacking our feet under the covers. I was hoping very much that this was the kitten in him and he would stop when he matured. He is now four years old and we are still waiting for him to mature.

He did eventually stop biting our feet at night but he still is a nose biter. He especially like to bite my nose for some reason. These last few months I have noticed his biting has been getting worse, not better. He has taken to biting my arms and legs like he is a kitten again. He does not always act that way but he gets into these frisky moods where he feels like he has to bite me.

I caught him in one of thee moods a few months…

Chris the Destroyer

Sleeping used to be difficult with an annoying cat around. Chris would keep us up at night, especially me, by biting my nose and digging his claws into my neck and back. We tried closing him out of the bedroom but he would go through great lengths to get us to open the door, including digging up the carpet. Since we no longer have carpet at the door, sleeping has been easier. We still put up with him crying at 4:00 a.m. but that is nothing compared to what we used to go through.

Unfortunately, our new home has doors that are not made using the highest of quality standards, so since Chris couldn’t dig down and destroy the carpet, he started digging up to destroy the door.

We decided to replace the door, along with the bathroom door, and put in something a little better. I’m not exactly a handyman and every project seems to come with complications, this was no different. Nothing on the new doors fit or lined up with the old doors but I eventually got them in and working.

Cat Frankie with new doors

Early the next morning I hear Chris whining and scratching at the door. I think to myself “he is going to ruin our new door” and I consider opening the door to get him to stop, but then I realized that I can’t let him win. I decided this would be a good test, so I went back to sleep. The next morning the door was still in one piece so chalk one up for team human.

Photo Friday: The Gang’s All Here

I don’t usually get a picture of all three boys in the same place. Usually, if I notice it, I will reach for my camera or phone and by the time I turn it on and focus, one of them decides it’s time to go. That is what happened last night. I was trying to help a Rose with a work project and all three were on the table helping me. As soon as I got my phone out, Frankie left.

Does Smart Cat Equal Bad Cat?

Chris really is a very smart cat but does that make him bad? hmm…

Charles Huss's avatarBad Cat Chris

I recently got a nice review for the Bad Cat Chris book on Amazon by someone named Mia (If you are reading this Mia, thanks for the review and the insight). She said she had a cat like Chris and suggested that smart cats misbehave more because they need more mental stimulation.

Bad Cat Chris on Curio CabinetI have not heard this before and I don’t know if it is true but it makes sense. Chris is probably the smartest cat I have ever had and has a knack for figuring things out that most cats won’t even attempt. I can’t tell you how many doors he has figured out how to open or how many things he has managed to get on top of where other cats would not even think to go.

I used to let him outside on “supervised” visits and he learned that going under cars meant I couldn’t catch him…
