Bully Bully

Yesterday evening Floki was sleeping on the sofa in Chris’s spot. Chris saw that, jumped on the sofa, whacked Floki until he left, and then lied down in his spot. I made a comment that Chris was a bully and my wife agreed.

This morning I was sitting up in bed enjoying my coffee when Frankie got on my lap looking for attention. As usual, when Chris saw that he immediately placed himself between me and Frankie. There was no whapping but Frankie doesn’t want to deal with Chris so he moves away. This was the scene a couple minutes later.

Chris has been this way since day one when we let him out of his carrier and he immediately took over the home, much to the chagrin of our other four cats.

My First Day Back at the Shelter

I mostly stopped volunteering when I got my lastest job early in the year. It was supposed to be part-time, about twenty hours a week, but the other part-time employee quit and it quickly turned into about thirty-five hours a week. I did manage to squeeze in a day here and there but then we went to West Virginia for two months.

Things have slowed down at work lately and it seems I might be able to consistently get Fridays off so I signed up for a shift last Friday. When I got there I noticed things had not changed much. Cats still needed homes and people still came around looking for cats

There were a fair number of kittens as well as adults cats. It seemed there were a lot of very friendly black cats that day.

There was also a Siamese kitten there.

I texted Rose his photo and she wanted me to adopt him but several minutes later someone came in with his paperwork wanting to adopt him. When a person wants to adopt a cat they take the cat’s paperwork to the adoption office. I imagine these people grabbed his paperwork so nobody else would take him and then wondered around the shelter in case they found a better option.

The Siamese was part of a group of kittens that were very cute and funny. I learned later they were all from the same litter even though only one was Siamese. I know a litter could be from more than one father so maybe that was the case.

While I was standing outside the cage talking to someone, one of the kittens climbed up the door and poked me in the back to get my attention.

Later I saw the same black kitten climb up the door but this time he had a copycat.

The Siamese cat climbed all the way to the top of the door.

I was worried he might hurt himself jumping down from that hight but I had to wait for him to get above the door so I could open it. Once inside I pulled the bench over to stand on and then had a hard time separating the cat from the cage.

The friendliest cat in the shelter and the one I most wanted to bring home was Berry.

Berry had a bad eye infection that the vets could not get under control so they had to remove his eye on Monday. I felt so bad because he was so very much in need of attention. I opened his cage a few times to pet him and he was just all over me. I have a video that I will try to post soon.

Alas, as much as we want to save them all it is just not realistic to think we can adopt another cat, especially since we already have two more than we are suppose to have.

The End of a Good Thing

My wife and I were on the catio yesterday evening with the cats who were out there much of the day. Frankie, in particular, always wants to be out there.

We talked about what Frankie was going to do after we return to Florida in just over two weeks to our house with no catio. It will surely feel like trying to put the genie back in the bottle.

Even here, Frankie has become quite the pain. As we were getting ready to go upstairs last night to go to bed, Frankie was at the door crying to go out. This morning at 6 a.m., after eating only half his breakfast, he was again at the door crying to go out.

All we can do is let them enjoy it while it lasts. I quess I will have to start taking Frankie for a walk again when we return.

Another Feline Visitor

The window by my desk overlooks our back yard. From time to time I will see a white cat walk through our yard. I think I saw the same cat in our yard last winter so we must be part of her territory. Yesterday, Frankie and Floki were on the catio and I went out there to check on them. When I did, I noticed their attention fixed on the white cat.

Nobody was howling or hissing or making a fuss. They were just looking at each other.

The last time this happened with another cat it was also a peaceful encounter. I speculated then that it must have been a female because another male would probably have elicited a different response. If I am right, this white cat is probably also a female. If anyone has a reason to confirm or reject my hypothesis, I would like to hear about it.

Catio Time

Our cats are finally starting to enjoy our catio after the interruption of our dog visitors. It took Floki until Wednesday but once out, he loved it.

Frankie greets Floki

Frankie goes out more often than Chris or Floki, not because he likes it more but because he is the one most likely to be hanging out near the back door when somebody goes outside.

The weather is starting to cool down here and I expect we will be outside more often which means the cats will be outside more often too. Its a win win.

As a side note, we had people over for dinner yesterday and later that evening we were sitting on the catio and a very cut grey kitten came up on the step and peeked in through the screen door. I believe I saw another cat walk by before I saw that kitten but it was dark. I put my hand against the screen and he smelled me and then walked over to the edge of the catio. I wanted to go get treats for him but considering our limited time here it is not wise to get them dependent on us. Fortunately, our cats were not on the catio at the time.

Getting Back to Normal

I mentioned yesterday that Floki has been napping with Frankie lately. I noticed him back with Chris yesterday afternoon so I think things are starting to get back to normal.

Later, while we were all downstairs watching TV, I noticed this:

I guess hanging out with both Chris and Frankie might become the new normal for Floki. There is nothing wrong with that.
