Photo Friday: Are You My Mother

I was putting mulch down around our pear tree the other day when a bird showed up and started tweeting to me. I think it was a robin but it wasn’t colorful. I thought maybe I was working around its nest but I didn’t see one.

I put my finger out and almost touched it but I didn’t want it to fly away so I withdrew my hand. I took a video of it and posted it on Facebook. Someone told me it was a fledgling and was probably kicked out of the nest by the mother. That made me think of that children’s book, “Are You My Mother.”

Mama birds are tough on the kids in some ways, but they do stick close and will keep prodding him to fly as well as feeding him. Some make the mistake of taking them and thinking they need help, or a wildlife rehabber or something, but they generally don’t.

That IS a young robin. He/she has speckled feathers on the wings, a white throat and if I see it correctly, there is pale orangeness on the breast. He was begging for food…if you had tried to touch it the parents would likely have strafed you and made a lot of noise to try and scare you away,.

That does look like the young robins we have in our yard. Such a terrific photo. XOCK, angels Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta & Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy, Sawyer, Kizmet, Audrey & Raleigh
