Squirrel/Bird Feeder Update

I ordered a ground feeder last week in an attempt to distract the squirrels away from our new window bird feeder. While I was waiting for it, a Bluejay found our feeder. The curtain was partially closed and I didn’t want to get too close and scare him away, but I took a photo anyway.

The ground feeder I ordered doubles as a birdbath but I put corn in it, which I read is a favorite of squirrels, and placed it under the bird feeder yesterday.

Later that day I saw a squirrel in the bird feeder and looked down to see the corn had not been touched. I watched for a while and saw the squirrel come close to the corn but he never looked at it. I don’t know if he was ignoring it or just had not found it yet.

This morning the squirrel was back in the bird feeder while Frankie and Floki were there. This time he was not as nervous around them as in the past. Both cats even attacked the window to no avail. Eventually, they just settled down to watch.

When the squirrel left, I looked down and saw that all three ears of corn were gone. Somehow the little squirrel managed to drag three ears of corn away. I think now I need to buy a bag of sunflower seeds. I’d like to see him drag all those away.

If three ears of corn had disappeared overnight here it could have been deer, raccoons or possums but I think the squirrels enjoy our sunflower seeds too much to mess with the corn!

Our squirrels are absolutely fearless. Neither humans nor cats can dissuade them from nomming from the bird feeders. Good luck! XOCK, angel Lily Olivia, angel Mauricio, Misty May, angel Giulietta, angel Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy, Sawyer & Kizmet

They do! There is a Louisiana youtube video series about squirrels and one of them set up a nutbar for squirrels – to try to find out, what they preferred. Corn was the LEAST preferred option (only 1 %), and the far overwhelming preference was sunflower seeds with over 60 percent. But maybe that is only their squirrels …

That is an interesting video. I bought a bag of sunflower seeds yesterday for the ground feeder. When the corn is gone, I will not buy more. Instead, I will use only the sunflower seeds.

Don;t be so sure it was a squirrel who got your corn…raccoons are relentless food opportunists !

My human’s boyfriend gives the neighborhood squirrels bread and the leftover carrot pulp from when he makes carrot juice. A few times he has actually made them sandwiches with spinach. MOL!

Those squirrels are so sneaky! He’s lucky there was glass between him and the kitties. My kitties would have gone nuts to see a squirrel that close – especially Dexter. We live on the second floor, so we don’t get to see a lot of squirrels.
