Here is a post about cat litter from June of 2015. In case you are wondering, we still use Dr. Elsey’s unscented cat litter.
Recently I heard about the possible health risks of clumping cat litter. After doing some research, I learned that the controversy started in 1995 after Marina Michaels wrote an article for Tiger Tribe Magazine titled Clumping Clay Kitty Litters: A Deadly Convenience? In it she described several litters of kittens dying of an unknown cause until she determined it was the clumping clay litter that was causing the problem.
Upon further research, I found that all other articles about the subject pointed back to Michael’s’ original article and it seems that no research has been done to prove, or disprove, her claim. It also seems that if there is a problem, kittens are affected considerably more than adult cats.
Proof or not, I thought it would not hurt to take away a potential danger and replace it with a healthier alternative. I also thought it would be lighter and…

Sammy and Teddy both were fine with the Arm and Hammer clumping unscented litter and I never realized it was harmful for kittens – we had no problems fortunately but I didn’t even think to research what was the best litter for them. They were seemingly content with what I used then and now. Never had pooping/peeing problems with a cat before so maybe that’s why I never thought to research it?? Glad the litter you use is working though. Nothing worse than when they stop using the litterbox!

I am not even convinced that clumping litter is bad for kittens. Sometimes one story gets overblown.
When we tried Pretty Litter none of us would poop in it. We always used the other box. We can’t use any grain/wood/paper litters because Raz will try to eat them so we stick with clumping.
I have mixed feelings about alternative litters. On the one hand they are good for the environment but on the other hand most cats don’t like them as much as regular litter.
We also use Dr. Elsey’s unscented. Over the past 40 years, we have tried every type. Once we found Dr. Elsey’s that was the end of our search. Everyone likes it! I like it because it has the least dust of anything I’ve tried. Those light or alternative letters can be quite dusty.
Dr. Elsey’s is good stuff.
Agreed. 🙂
