I came home from work this afternoon and noticed Frankie holding up his right paw when he moved. I could see he was in obvious pain when he placed it on the ground but I wasn’t sure what happened.
Rose was home all day and she had not noticed him limping before then. I will admit that I do accidentally kick Frankie every now and then because he tends to walk in front of where I’m walking. This morning I almost tripped over him but I checked to make sure he was okay and he seemed fine. Perhaps I didn’t notice his paw. I don’t know. It can also be something entirely different.
I looked at his paw and didn’t see anything obvious. I then picked him up and brought him to Rose who also examined his paw. She didn’t see anything obvious either.
Since I’m not sure what vets are doing these days I decided to wait to see if he got better. Something like a sprain might show signs of improvement in a day or so. So far, after three hours, he is still limping.
What do you think? Do you think waiting a couple of days is okay?

I think if he’s not better by Wednesday morning I’ll call the vet.

I am certainly made plenty of mistakes in my life. Hopefully, this isn’t one of them.
We had a similar issue with Katsu – he made a bad jump and we think he sprained his leg. Two days of getting babied and he is back to jumping – carefully, but jumping. If this lasts for more than 3 days and/or you can see something obvious, like an infection or something, I’d call the vet.

Thank you so much for saying you occasionally kick the cat. Mine get underfoot sometimes (they like to hide around the corners) and I have done the same. I think it is OK to wait a day or two. It’s like in humans–you hit something and it hurts at first then after a couple days, the pain is gone. Poor Frankie….
It is always Frankie I kick. It is never Chris or Floki. Frankie just has a habit of getting in my way when I’m walking.

Get your fingers along his paw. If it is hot, visit the vet immediately, then he has an infection. If it isn’t hot and it does not look swollen – wait, unless it gets worse by the hour.
It is not hot.
We think it’s okay to watch him for a day or two. Our Dolly had that recently and it resolved on it’s own so we figured it was a sprain.
Poor Frankie. I think you could wait a couple of days as long as he still wants food. If he was in too much pain, he probably wouldn’t eat.
I think I will wait until Wednesday morning.

Poor Frankie, I agree with others, wait till Wednesday, if doesn’t get suddenly worse.
He is still limping but not as bad so we are hopeful.
Going with the majority here – waiting perhaps until tomorrow to see if there’s some improvement…..kind of sounds like a sprain – especially when you aren’t SEEING anything wrong. I think like others – our “gut” tells us what to do. Yours was saying wait a day or two and I think that was wise. Hoping today he’s BETTER. 🙂

probably just a sprain but what the vet will do, to make sure it’s not serious, is simply see if he’ll put weight on it. To do that, you put him on a table, then lift his back end, so rear paws are in the air, and see if he does take his weight on both front paws. If he can, it’ll probably right itself in a few days. If he doesn’t try to put weight on that paw at all, then it’s more serious. Have you checked higher up on the “arm”? Might also be a sprain at elbow or shoulder.
He is putting more weight on it this morning although he still seems to limp a little. We are hopeful.
Hopefully it is improving. I haven’t had any of my cats with a limp. The outdoor, visiting cats, they’ve had limps. Usually, their limps improved over several days (4-7 days). If you end up taking Frankie to the vet, ask them if they have any precautions in place. My vet, when you arrive, you call in, a tech comes out and collects your animal and takes them into the office. The vet called out asking the standard exam questions, etc. – pretty much a visit but w/o me in the exam room.
Frankie seems considerably better today, thanks. I think our vet has similar practices.
Maybe video it and, if he’s still doing it tomorrow, send the video to the vet, if they do that kind of thing? In the event that your vet is seeing non-emergency cases, you know full well that he won’t limp when required. Don’t ask me how I know this.
