We bought a new Keurig and our boys have been enjoying the box so when I happened upon this blog post from 2014 I thought it would be good to share for Throwback Thursday.
Everyone who is owned by a cat knows what happens when you bring a new box into the house. It is like Kitty Christmas. The first thing they have to do is get inside like a child with a new playhouse. But why are cats so fascinated by a simple empty box? I suppose there are a number of things at โplayโ here.
I think the main reason is that cats love to play. The reason that they have an instinct for play is probably because it helps them practice for survival. Attacking their housemates, assuming it is not for reasons of dominance or territory, is practice for the hunt. Playing in a box is just an extension of that.
A box offers something a wild cat is looking for: stealth. Nevermind that they are not wild cats, they donโt know that. From inside a box a cat can seeโฆ

Our cats never met a box they didn’t like.
We love boxes. Bags come a close second.
Yes, bags are popular too.
Teddy doesn’t seem to have the “box thing” and I think he’s missing out on a lot of fun – I’ve tried putting toys in there to coax him in a box or snacks but no way. It may have something to do with how he was trapped (if he was since we don’t know what his first year was like) but he is very suspicious of boxes. Sammy LOVED them!

That could be. I had a Doberman years ago who hated car rides. Have you ever heard of a dog that doesn’t like a car ride? Since she was found as a stray we speculated she was brought in a car and dumped.
I think their history definitely is tough for them to put behind them – something always remains even if they get “better” – it’s still there. Teddy STILL won’t drink water from anything but the bathroom sink – period. LOL
Wow. Do you have to keep it full of water or does he only drink from the faucet?
I have to keep it full of water…..every day I empty and refill with fresh water. We bought “stairs” so he can get up to the sink on his own. I’ve tried everything to give him other options but he’s not interested. I even bought a BIG HUGE BOWL (almost sink-sized) to put in the basement with fresh water for him to drink and he won’t use it. Keeping that changed and filled as well as the bathroom sink is a chore in a 3 story house (!) but WHATEVER it takes because fresh water is so important for them. Sigh………….
You are a good mom. ๐
I try…………………….
Can confirm. I am pretty sure when I get new deliveries, that my cat doesn’t understand I purchased something for myself… she probably rather thinks “Hurry! Remove the trash inside and give me my box! Thanks!”. ๐
Evidence…
I’m sure that is exactly what she thinks. ๐
