When we moved into our current home almost two years ago, an egret would show up every afternoon expecting to be fed. I assumed the previous resident had fed the bird and I felt bad letting him (I will assume it is male for this writing) go hungry, but we typically don’t have meat suitable for birds lying around the house. I tried giving him cat food but that was a no-go. We did buy hot dogs for him once but we are not always home and didn’t want the bird to become dependent on us so we stopped feeding him when the dogs were gone. Soon he only came around occasionally and then not at all.
That changed the other day when he showed up at our back door looking for food. I’m not sure what changed but he apparently has a long memory.
Again we had no food for him. Rose wanted me to throw him some cheese but I didn’t think that was a good idea, partially because the cats were very interested in him and opening the door would have been difficult with two bad cats and Puck wanting to run out.
Eventually he got the hint and went away. I felt very bad not giving him anything but I think it would be better if I teach him how to fish.
That is a smart bird 🙂
I’m thinking it is a lazy bird. 🙂
Wow! We agree with you though. We don’t have a bird feeder as our cats go out and we don’t want to create a kitty diner! It always feels so mean, but is better for them (the wild birds) in the long run.

That’s right Nellie. I don’t mind feeding a wild bird every now and then but I don’t want them to become dependent.
What a beautiful bird!
We are lucky to live where we are. There are many beautiful birds here. I especially like the ospreys. I also like to watch the pelicans glide inches above the water.
What cool Bird TV! I wish we had those coming around to visit.
You are in California, right Summer? What do you see out your window?
Sparrows and mourning doves and that is about it.
I agree we never feed the birds here…we get lots as we put water out for them..they look for water more than food..since we moved her we have counted 52 different species and this includes an Egret that I spotted standing on the branch of a gum tree looking at the dam waiting to catch a yabby..funniest thing to see..love the pics..bird tv is always great for the cats! hugs Fozziemum
I would love to see this bird trying to catch a fish rather than waiting in line at the welfare office. 😉
Bwahahahahaahha you may need to grab a rod and take the boy on field trip…
😀
🙂
We’ve never had a bird that big in our yard!
I used to live near Chicago and very rarely saw large birds up there.
That’s an amazing Bird TV ! Purrs
🙂
Your cats were thinking about what do after they caught the egret. 🙂
That is a cat feast there. 🙂
OMC, that is the very bestest bird TV ever! XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
