We Are Selling Our West Virginia Home

We decided this would be our last summer in our West Virginia home.

While we love the house, we have never spent more than two months here until now. We’ve come to realize that it is great to escape the hustle and bustle of living in a densely populated area in Florida, but only for a little while. The truth is, it’s boring here. It’s usually a 45-minute drive to do anything halfway interesting.

Add the fact that there is so much work to be done on the house this year. It feels like a money pit. We spent $22,000 on a new roof alone. We also spent about $450 to repair our stove and had to purchase a new dishwasher, among other things.

I think the straw that broke the camel’s back was when Rose was bit on the foot by a brown recluse spider. She developed a terrible, itchy, and painful rash all over her leg and other parts of her body. She went to the doctor three times trying to get relief. It finally subsided after more than two weeks.

What bothers me is the fact that I worry about the cats more here. Today, the neighbor’s dog was again outside desperately trying to break through the fence to get at Frankie.

We listed it last Wednesday. So far, we have had two couples look at it. The second is talking to their bank about it, and the first wants to see it again tomorrow. I put a sign on the door informing people to watch out for Frankie.

Now comes the challenge of getting rid of everything we brought here or bought for the place. We will bring some back to Florida, but our house there is tiny in comparison.

Well I think you’re doing the right thing and I hope it sells quickly…..a “come back customer” is a good sign. Good luck. You haven’t been super happy there and if it’s boring (with a capital B) then it’s never going to be a happy place. Love your escape artist sign! Keep us all posted – please!

    Hugs, Pam (and Teddy)

Whoa, that is a huge house!! Looks like it could be beautiful with tons of upkeep and repairs as you have already pointed out. We live in an old frame house, 1905, and it is a never ending pocketbook robber…but we live in a semi rural area and that keeps us here…for now…with an acre of yard, the upkeep is hard on our 70+ bodies…

Best wishes on selling your house to some lucky family!

Charles–I for one am happy to hear this. Spending money on a place you rarely stay at is one thing but worrying about your cats…that’d be the clincher for me. I hope the house sells quickly so you can get back here to Florida. My fingers are crossed for you. The escape artist sign is adorable!

Maintaining two residences is an expensive proposition, especially when they are so far from each other … unless, of course, one is a villa in Italy. MOL! We hope you find a buyer quickly. Old houses are very expensive. The amount Mom and Dad have poured into ours in the past 41 years is astronomical! The sign is purrfect. Mom says she needs to post one of those here. We are sorry about the spider bite and happy to hear Rose is getting better. Dad Tom was bitten by a brown recluse about 30 years ago and ended up in the hospital on IV antibiotics. Sending POTP for a quick sale. XOCK, angels Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta & Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth, Calista Jo, Cooper Murphy, Sawyer, Kizmet, Audrey & Raleigh

Good choice, I would sure worry about Frankie too. You already know what I would do to that dog.

My wife wants to bring her gun onto the patio. I pointed out that I have pepper spray for dogs, but she thinks the dog is vicious and that’s not enough.

Lovely old home, but they so often become the “money pit” even when once loved and full of memories … best wishes for an easy sale to fill your pockets …

Hope your sale goes well. We’re in the process of selling my uncle’s house. There is so much stuff, it’s been taking a long time. Glad Rose is okay. Spider bites are scary.

Thank you. We are busy going through stuff deciding what to keep and what to give away. We can only keep what will fit in the car but the cats will take up much of the room.
